El Coloquio ¿Del otro la’o?, una iniciativa de estudiantes y profesor@s en la UPR-RUM desde el año 2006, es un foro internacional para el diálogo y el debate sobre temas relacionados con las sexualidades queer (o LGBTTQ).

Se solicitan propuestas en las siguientes categorías: ponencias para paneles, mesas de ponentes, talleres y actividades artísticas y performeras. Se aceptarán propuestas relacionadas, mas no limitadas, a los siguientes temas:

Categorías

Paneles – Constituidos por el Comité de Programa a partir de propuestas para ponencias individuales que sean aceptadas. Los paneles estarán organizados en sesiones de tres o cuatro ponentes de acuerdo a un tema afín. Cada ponente dispondrá de veinte (20) minutos para su
intervención. Habrá una sesión de diálogo con la audiencia después de cada panel.

Mesas de Ponentes – Constituidas de antemano en la propuesta por l@s participantes. Abordan un tema desde diferentes perspectivas. Tendrán un máximo de cuatro conferenciantes, quienes consumirán un tiempo equitativo en sus ponencias. Las mesas serán seguidas por una sesión de diálogo con la audiencia.

Talleres – Sesiones de trabajo participativo con objetivos específicos y un producto esperado de los/as participantes. La propuesta debe incluir los objetivos del taller y el producto que se espera. Debe mencionar además si el taller está dirigido a una audiencia en particular y si hay alguna restricción de cantidad de participantes.

Actividades Artísticas y Performeras – Actividades como actuaciones de corte experimental, presentaciones de películas, lecturas poéticas o presentaciones musicales que aludan a algún aspecto relacionado con sexualidades queer. Sesiones de diálogo con la audiencia seguirán toda intervención de este tipo.

Toda propuesta debe incluir lo siguiente:
Título de la ponencia o actividad y categoría
Nombre, afiliación, mini-biografía (200 palabras o menos) y correo electrónico de cada ponente o participante
Síntesis de ponencia o actividad (800 palabras o menos)

The Colloquium ¿Del otro la’o?, an initiative of students and faculty at UPR-RUM since 2006, is an international forum for dialogue and debate on themes related to queer sexualities.

We are soliciting proposals in the following categories: papers for the constitution of panels, roundtables, workshops and artistic and performative interventions. The following is a list of suggested, but by no means exclusive, themes for proposals:

Categories

Panels – Constituted by the Programming Committee on the basis of accepted individual paper proposals. Panels will be organized around a common theme in sessions of three or four interventions. Each panelist will have twenty (20) minutes for her intervention. A session of dialogue with the audience will follow each panel.

Roundtables – Constituted in advance by the proponents. Roundtables approach a theme from different perspectives. They will consist of a maximum of four speakers, who will have the same amount of time for their interventions. Roundtables will be followed by a session of dialogue with the audience.

Workshops – These will have specific objectives and an expected product from the participants. The proposal should include the workshop’s purposes and the expected product. It should also mention whether it is intended for a particular audience and whether there is any restriction on the number of participants.

Artistic and Performative Interventions – These can include experimental performances, film screenings and discussions, poetic readings, and musical presentations related to queer sexualities. Dialogues with the audience will follow all such interventions.

All proposals should include the following:

Title and category
Name, affiliation, mini-bio (200 words or less), and email of each speaker or participant
Abstract (800 words or less)

Aunque el aborto es legal en Puerto Rico, el gobierno les ha fallado a las mujeres al no orientarlas sobre los derechos que tienen con relación a la salud sexual y reproductiva.

Así lo reclamó hoy una veintena de mujeres que se manifestaron frente al Capitolio para denunciar que el “Estado en Puerto Rico se ha convertido en un fotuto de las organizaciones religiosas fundamentalistas, dejando atrás su deber de educar a nuestras niñas y mujeres, sobre las conductas que tienen que observar para preservar su vida”.

La actividad se llevó a cabo en la misma jornada cuando se celebra la Campaña por la Despenalización del Aborto en Latinoamérica.

El grupo de mujeres desfiló hasta la plazoleta del lado norte del Capitolio, cada una cargando lo que parecían huevos gigantescos, simbolizando pesos que cargan las mujeres a diario debido a la violencia, paternidad irresponsable, pobreza, dolor, religión y discrimen, entre otros.

“Estamos llamando la atención con respecto a los derechos sexuales y reproductivos en Puerto Rico. Contrario a otros lugares de Latinoamérica, en Puerto Rico el aborto es legal”, sostuvo Feldman. “Sin embargo, estamos llamando la atención a la falta de información, a la falta de educación de los derechos sexuales y reproductivos en Puerto Rico”.

Feldman destacó que se estima en 800,000 los abortos que se realizan cada año en el resto de Latinoamérica, donde no es legal, con excepción de Cuba. Añadió que en los países donde es legal, se registra una cantidad menor de abortos. No obstante, considera que la falta de orientación conlleva tener hijos no deseados, lo que desemboca muchas veces en problemáticas sociales que aquejan a las familias puertorriqueñas.

“Donde está la necesidad crasa es en la parte de educación, mucho antes de que se necesite el servicio de terminación de aborto. Las mujeres tenemos muchos derechos sexuales y reproductivos. Entre ellos, está el aborto, la adopción, los anticonceptivos, el derecho a una relación saludable y libre de violencia y el derecho a escoger cuántos hijos va a tener, cuándo los va a tener y con quién uno se va a relacionar para formar una familia”, dijo Feldman.

“Esos temas no se están discutiendo a cabalidad en las escuelas, en las clínicas de salud, en los espacios donde se pueden desarrollar estas conversaciones cuando las muchachas todavía son jóvenes”, afirmó.

Coartan libertad de expresión en el Capitolio a grupo de feministas

Se suscita otra violación a la libertad de expresión en la Casa de las Leyes. A la líder feminista Alana Feldman se le impidió esta mañana visitar las oficinas de los legisladores para entregar material educativo sobre el aborto en Latinoamérica.

Cinco guardias de seguridad, en momentos distintos, le dijeron a Feldman que está prohibido entrar con material “de propaganda” al edificio.

La líder feminista acudió a la oficina del presidente del Senado, Thomas Rivera Schatz, para pedir explicaciones y ahí la ayudante del líder senatorial Kathy Erazo le pidió disculpas por lo sucedido.

Erazo le indicó que las únicas instrucciones que hay con respecto a las visitas del público a la Casa de las Leyes es que la persona se identifique, informe a quién va a visitar y con qué propósito.

Esta mañana, a Feldman incluso se le prohibió exhibir en la solapa de su blusa un botón que leía “Por el derecho a decidir”.

Los guardias le llegaron a plantear que si algún legislador estaba interesado en el material que ella pretendía entregarles, éste debía salir a buscarlo fuera.

Una de las guardias de seguridad que atiende el acceso al Capitolio, Julie Laboy, señaló que la líder de “Taller Salud” participaba de la manifestación que un grupo de feminista llevó a cabo esta mañana frente a la Casa de las Leyes y que las instrucciones que ella ha recibido de parte de la Oficina de Seguridad del Capitolio es que no se puede dejar pasar a nadie “con propaganda”.

A Feldman se le entregó su botón y las hojas que ya está repartiendo entre los legisladores.

Chance led me to the genre with which I am currently enamored: portraiture. I say that I “stumbled” into it because my very first project was an apparently easy, short observational piece. I immediately recognized the genre’s potential to engage with individual faces, to depict succinctly the ever-elusive essence of somebody’s life story, or an emotive, tiny detail of it. That is how Boquita, and Mizery were born. Boquita—whose name is a Spanish diminutive of “mouth”—is a window into the life of a brash but tender transsexual performer and social worker from the Dominican Republic. When I went to film Boquita lip-synch in Spanish to English songs at one of Boston’s drag establishments, we needed to get permission from the club’s hostess. That’s when Mizery came into my picture and I came into hers. “Certainly,” Mizery said at the time, “you may film Boquita,” and later mumbled, dismayed, “yet, I do not understand why the film is not about me.” Quick to recognize a persona, I promised to come back. This Panamanian drag performer is a local celebrity who became the subject of the latest portrait, Mizery, about the arduous nightlife of this drag queen.

I dove into the world of “my” subjects. Boquita and Mizery tolerated me, although they seemed to be aware that our relationship was not symmetrical. While I had the privilege of pointing the camera at them, they exercised power by controlling how much of themselves they would allow to be seen. Whether covered by make-up, earrings, artificial coloring or scarves, I searched for their faces. Fascinated by their countenances, I eventually faced a mirror that was flipped back at me. This confirmed for me the notion put forth by visual anthropologist MacDougall that the ultimate subject of a documentary is the unfolding relationship between subject and artist. Triangular in nature because of the presence of the camera, our relationship was defined by a correspondence between their make-up and the camera, my own technological mask.

After I completed these two portraits, I began to receive invitations from Latino transgender communities to make films with them. I was thrilled to receive an invitation to work on my current project set in Puerto Rico (La aguja/ The Needle ) about an illegal beauty clinic where transgender sexual workers alter their bodies. La aguja/ The Needle won second place in the 2009 HBO Documentaries Competition. The purpose of this award is to find the next great Latino documentary film of uncompromising quality and honesty. The recent hate crime (November 14 2009) in Puerto Rico of a john who murdered, decapitated, dismembered and burned Jorge Steven López Mercado for not being a “real woman” has made my work so much more urgent. We are diligently working to finish this project in 2011.

From the start, my work has been interdisciplinary and invested in having an impact in the art world and academia, as well as in the larger public sphere. Trained as a filmmaker and an academic, with a specialization in gender, sexuality and media studies, my work has mostly focused on the Latin@ transgender experience. In fact, gender and sexuality has been part of my academic, artistic and curatorial agenda for the past eight years. As a curator, I was in charge of three itinerant film and video exhibits and of the transgender film series for Performance Studies’ Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics’ 2007 Encuentro in Buenos Aires. That Encuentro was dedicated to theories and practices of Body Politics. Academically, I have organized and presented in panels dedicated to the study of gender and sexuality.

Besides making documentaries that are screened in festivals and museums worldwide, and writing articles and curating shows about this community, I have also explored transgender issues politically, including conducting workshops around police violence against transgendered sex workers. In 2005 I was invited to Colombia to lead a workshop addressing acts of violence by the Colombian police and military towards the transgender sex workers population in Bogotá and Medellín. Leading this workshop was one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences in my life. The situations I encountered were much more complex than my preconceived, and sometimes misguided ideas, about the Colombian police, and even the transgender community itself. This groundbreaking workshop has been documented in the Harvard Review of Latin America’s special issue on violence ( http://www.drclas.harvard.edu/revista/articles/view/1038), and in the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics’ issue on borders (http://hemi.nyu.edu/journal/3.2/eng/en32_pg_oquendo_villar_pic_harrison.html). While doing this workshop I met Diana Navarro, the leader of transgender sex workers in Santa Fe, Bogotá. Ever since 2005 Diana and I have been in contact. My work in Colombia led to an invitation by Diana to use my films (Boquita and Mizery) to stimulate dialogue with her peers about ways to prevent police misconduct against this often-targeted population. This year I received a very special invitation from her to make a documentary about her community. Santa Fe is one of the toughest neighborhoods to film in Bogotá. Only insiders or invited guests can film there, given the types of activities that happen therein and the strong paramilitary presence. During my two-week visit to Santa Fe in August 2009, Diana began the process of guiding me to better understand the logic of this barrio and the characters that populate its streets, as well as the social interactions, stories and dramas that unfold there. In this 2-week period I worked with Susan Meiselas, Lorie Novak and Julio Pantojas in a photography workshop, completing a photographic portrait of Diana in her home. I am currently working with Diana to launch a media advocacy campaign to prevent violence against this population.

The organic development of these projects points to why I need to engage with these stories. My artistic practice has altered not only the way I understand the communities I’ve been portraying, but it has profoundly transformed me. Originally drawn to performance because of its sparkles and glamour, I have learned to look into the everydayness of glitter and the hard work that makes up faces. Having learned so much from doing these portraits, they are nevertheless my way of confessing how much I do not know about those portrayed.
